Ripple Fold Curtains 101: The Ultimate Guide

Ripple fold curtains, also called S-fold curtains, are a modern window treatment defined by smooth, continuous S-curves that hold their shape from top to bottom. The look is sleek and uniform, which is why ripple fold has become the go-to header for contemporary rooms, wide or wall-to-wall windows, and motorized drapery. This guide covers what they are, how the track system works, fullness options, how ripple fold compares to pinch pleat, and how to order and hang them.

Quick answer: Ripple fold (S-fold) curtains hang from a track using evenly spaced carriers, so the fabric forms continuous, uniform waves with no visible hooks. They need a compatible track (not a standard rod), come in fullness options around 1.8x, 2.1x, and 2.4x depending on the snap spacing, and suit modern, wide, and motorized windows. The 5-inch tape at 2.1x fullness is the most popular setup.

Ripple fold curtain S-fold system overview

What are ripple fold curtains?

A ripple fold curtain hangs from a track fitted with carriers spaced at regular intervals. Snap tape sewn to the back of the curtain clips onto those carriers, so the fabric is pulled into even, wave-like S-folds that stay consistent whether the curtain is open or closed. There are no visible rings or hooks, which gives the clean, architectural look. The trade-off to know up front: ripple fold requires a compatible track and carrier system, so it is not something you hang on a standard curtain rod.

Ripple fold vs. pinch pleat: which should you choose?

These are the two most common tailored headers, and they suit different rooms. For more on all the options, see our guide to how to choose a curtain heading.

What the ripple fold system includes

Ripple fold curtain system parts: track, runner, carrier, tape, curtain

A complete ripple fold setup includes the track, a runner (plus a center runner for split panels), the carriers, the snap tape, and the curtains themselves.

Snap spaces and runner spacing

Ripple fold snap space tape options

Wavy look: ripple fold creates the most consistently wavy appearance of any header, and the S-curves keep their shape.

Snap spaces: available in three tape snap spaces, 4 1/4", 5", and 5 7/10". The 4 1/4" tape is a popular choice, and the 5" tape is the most common overall.

Runner spacing: standard runner spacing is 2.36".

Fullness options

Fullness is the curtain's flat width divided by the track width, and for ripple fold it is set by the snap space and runner spacing.

Ripple fold curtain fullness options by snap space

  • 4.2 in (107 mm): about 1.8x fullness (~80%), with a fold depth of 3.5 in.
  • 5 in (125 mm): about 2.1x fullness (~110%), the most commonly used, with a fold depth of 4.5 in.
  • 5.7 in (145 mm): about 2.4x fullness (~140%), with a fold depth of 5.5 in.

How to order ripple fold curtains

How to order ripple fold curtains from Curtarra

1. Choose your snap tape. Pick the tape that suits your runner. Buckle tape is popular because the snaps attach to the runner's carrier more easily than button tape.

2. Select your fullness. Based on the snap space, choose your fullness. The 5-inch tape at 2.1x fullness is the common preference.

3. Measure your track. Measure the track width and height. Panel width equals the track width divided by the number of panels, and panel length is measured from the bottom of the track to the floor.

4. Confirm compatibility. If you already have a track and runner system, email us at support@curtarra.com with photos of your hardware and the runner numbers so we can match the tape. The center master usually needs a little extra tape width.

5. Curtarra's default. We use a 2.36-inch runner and 5-inch tape by default, creating 2.1x fullness, which fits about 80% of tracks that are 3/4" in diameter.

How to install ripple fold curtains

Ripple fold curtain track and hardware from Curtarra

1. Prepare your track. Make sure the track is securely mounted and clean. You can order the Wesley Track with ripple fold runners from Curtarra.

2. Attach the runners. Insert the runners into the track, spaced evenly to match your tape's snap space.

3. Snap the curtains on. Clip the curtain's snap tape onto the runners' carriers, starting at one end and following the spacing.

4. Dress the folds. Once hung, gently form the fabric into even S-curves for a smooth, uniform look.

5. Most important: make sure your track runner and carrier match the tape snap.

Choosing the right fabric for ripple fold curtains

Weight: heavier fabrics create more defined waves, while lighter fabrics give a softer look. Light to mid-weight fabrics tend to form the cleanest, most even S-folds.
Opacity: choose sheers for light filtering or heavier fabrics for privacy and insulation.
Pattern and color: because the folds are so uniform, solids and subtle textures show off the wave beautifully, though a pattern works too.

Frequently asked questions

What are ripple fold curtains?

Also called S-fold curtains, they hang from a track on evenly spaced carriers so the fabric forms continuous, uniform waves with no visible hooks, for a clean, modern look.

Do ripple fold curtains need a special track?

Yes. Ripple fold requires a compatible track with carriers, so you cannot hang them on a standard curtain rod. The snap tape clips onto the carriers to set the wave spacing.

Ripple fold vs. pinch pleat: which is better?

Ripple fold is modern, glides very smoothly, and suits wide or motorized windows; pinch pleat is more classic and formal and works on a standard rod with heavier fabrics. It comes down to the look and hardware you want.

What fullness do ripple fold curtains use?

Around 1.8x, 2.1x, or 2.4x, set by the snap-space tape (4.2, 5, or 5.7 inch). The 5-inch tape at about 2.1x fullness is the most common.

Can ripple fold curtains be motorized?

Yes. Because they glide so smoothly on the track, ripple fold curtains are one of the best headers for motorized drapery systems.
