100% Blackout Curtains: How to Stop Side and Top Light Leaks for Good

The problem isn't your curtains. It's your curtain rod.

If you've invested in blackout curtains and still wake up to light bleeding in from the sides or top of your window, you're not alone. This is one of the most common complaints among blackout curtain buyers — and the fix is simpler than you think.

True blackout requires a two-part system: a high-quality blackout fabric and a rod designed to physically seal every gap. This guide shows you exactly how to achieve it.

Light Taupe

Why Do Blackout Curtains Still Let Light In?

Short answer: Standard curtain rods leave structural gaps at the sides and top of your window that no fabric can close on its own.

Here's where light enters even with blackout curtains installed:

  • Side gaps — Standard rods end before the wall. The curtain fabric hangs open at both ends, creating a direct channel for light
  • Top gaps — Rods mounted too low leave space between the curtain top and ceiling
  • Center gap — Two panels rarely meet in a perfect seal at the middle

Each of these gaps is a structural problem, not a fabric problem. The solution is a rod that closes them by design.

The Solution: Max French Return Curtain Rod + Blackout Curtains

The Curtarra Max Custom French Return Curtain Rod is engineered with a U-shaped return that curves the rod ends back toward the wall. The curtain fabric follows this curve and presses flush against the wall surface — physically sealing the side gaps that standard rods leave open.

"Our 'Wrap Around' curve seals your windows. It doesn't just hang curtains — it physically blocks the slivers of light that traditional rods miss."

How to Achieve 100% Blackout: Step-by-Step

Step 1 — Start With True Blackout Fabric

Choose a 100% blackout fabric like Gary with a 99%+ light-blocking rating. This is your first line of defense. The rod seals the edges; the fabric blocks the center.

Step 2 — Size Your Rod Correctly

Getting the sizing right is critical — the Max Rod is custom-made to your exact width and is non-returnable for sizing errors.

Measurement chart for curtain rod installation with dimensions labeled.

The Golden Sizing Formula:

  • Rod Width = Window frame width + 6–10 inches on each side
  • Curtain Coverage Width = Rod width + 9 inches (accounts for both 4 1/2" U-shape returns)
  • Single Panel Width = (Curtain Coverage Width × Fullness factor) ÷ Number of panels

💡 Fullness recommendation: Use 2x fullness for maximum blackout — the extra fabric density adds a secondary layer of light blocking.

💡 Silent Glide Rings: Order 1 ring per 4 inches of rod width (rounded up) + 2 extra rings for the returns.

Step 3 — Mount as Close to the Ceiling as Possible

This is the most overlooked step. The higher the rod, the smaller the top gap — ideally less than 1 inch between the curtain top and the ceiling.

Installation Tips

  • Use a drill bit slightly smaller than M4/M5 for pilot holes
  • Hollow walls (drywall, wood, metal) → use standard screws
  • Solid walls (concrete, brick) → use the included expansion screws
  • Mount the rod as high as possible — ceiling proximity is key to eliminating top light gaps
  • For the cleanest look, align both brackets at the same height before drilling

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a French return rod completely eliminate side light?

Yes — when properly sized and installed flush to the wall, the U-shaped return wraps the curtain fabric all the way to the wall surface, physically closing the side gap. This is the most effective method for eliminating side light without blackout side panels.

How far should the curtain rod extend past the window?

Extend the rod 6–10 inches beyond the window frame on each side. This ensures the curtain fully covers the window when open and provides enough fabric to wrap around the returns.

Can I use any blackout curtain with the Max French Return Rod?

Yes, as long as you account for the extra 9 inches of curtain width needed to wrap around both returns (4.5 inches per side). Use our sizing formula above to calculate the correct panel width.

What is the maximum width for the Max Rod?

The Max Rod is custom-made up to 82 inches wide. For wider windows, contact us via Live Chat to discuss options.

Does the Max Rod work on concrete walls?

Yes. Use the included expansion screws for solid walls (concrete or brick). Standard screws are used for hollow walls (drywall, wood, or metal).

How close to the ceiling should I mount the rod?

As close as possible — ideally within 1–2 inches of the ceiling. The smaller the gap between the curtain top and ceiling, the less light enters from above.
