How to Measure Cafe Curtains: 7 Header Styles Explained

Cafe curtains cover only the lower half of a window — giving you privacy at eye level while keeping the top open for natural light. But getting the measurements right depends entirely on which header style you choose.

This guide covers all seven Curtarra cafe curtain header styles, with exact measurement formulas for each.

Before You Measure: What You Need to Know

What is a cafe curtain?
A cafe curtain mounts on a rod positioned at the midpoint of your window — typically at the window sill or slightly above. Unlike full-length curtains, cafe curtains cover only the bottom half, making them ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and street-facing rooms where you want privacy without blocking light.

Tools you'll need:

  • Steel measuring tape
  • Pencil and paper
  • Your installed cafe rod (measure after the rod is in place)

Two measurements you always need:

  • Width — the length of your installed cafe rod
  • Length — from the top of the rod down to your desired endpoint (usually the window sill)

The 7 Cafe Header Styles and How to Measure Each

cafe rod pocket curtains panel size

1. Cafe Rod Pocket

What it looks like: The curtain rod slides directly through a sewn pocket at the top of the panel. Creates soft, gathered folds. The pocket is 3/4" at the top with a 1 1/2" rod pocket — fits rods up to 1 1/2" diameter.

White Stripe

Best for: Classic, relaxed cafe curtain look. Kitchens, bathrooms, cottage-style interiors.

Note: Not easy to open and close frequently — best for curtains that stay in place.

Width Formula

Panel Width = Rod Width × Fullness ÷ Number of Panels

  • Recommended fullness: 2.0x – 2.5x
  • Example: 36" rod, 2 panels, 2.5x fullness → each panel = 36 × 2.5 ÷ 2 = 45"

Length Formula

Panel Length = Distance from top of rod to window sill + 1"

  • The +1" accounts for the rod pocket hem sitting above the rod
  • Example: Rod to sill = 18" → order 19"

Tip: Measure your rod length after it's installed, not the window frame width. The rod is what determines your curtain width.

2. Cafe Flat Panel

What it looks like: A clean, flat panel with a 4-in-1 tape header — the most versatile cafe header style. Comes with hooks included (1 per 5", first hook 2 1/2" from edge). Can be hung in multiple ways: as a flat panel with clip rings, pencil pleat, or back tab style. Compatible with rings, clips, and tracks including IKEA Vidga.

White and Champagne

Best for: Minimalist, modern, or Scandinavian interiors. Anyone who wants maximum flexibility in how the curtain hangs.

Note: Rings and clips are NOT included — order separately. Long metal hooks for rod/ring; small metal hooks for track/runner.

Width Formula

Panel Width = Rod Width × Fullness ÷ Number of Panels

  • Recommended fullness: 1.5x – 2.0x (flat panel look) or 2.0x – 2.5x (gathered look)
  • Example: 36" rod, 2 panels, 2.0x fullness → each panel = 36 × 2.0 ÷ 2 = 36"

Length Formula

Length varies by hanging style:

  • Flat Panel with clip rings: clip position to window sill
  • Pencil Pleat / Flat Hooks: hook hole to window sill
  • Back Tab style: top of rod + 1/2" to window sill

For the most common clip ring setup:
Panel Length = Distance from clip to window sill

Tip: The 4-in-1 tape gives you four different hanging looks from one panel. Decide your hanging style before measuring so you use the correct length formula.

3. Cafe Back Tab

What it looks like: Hidden fabric loops (back tabs) sewn to the back of the panel — the rod slides through these tabs, keeping the front of the curtain completely clean with no visible hardware. Creates crisp, structured folds. Tabs are approximately 4" in height, ~6" per tab spacing.

Best for: Contemporary and transitional interiors where a clean, tailored front is important. Works with rods and rings/clips.

Note: Not easy to open and close frequently. For track mounting, use small ZAC metal hooks with the back tab loops.

Width Formula

Panel Width = Rod Width × Fullness ÷ Number of Panels

  • Recommended fullness: 2.0x – 2.5x
  • Example: 36" rod, 2 panels, 2.0x fullness → each panel = 36 × 2.0 ÷ 2 = 36"

Length Formula

Panel Length = Distance from top of rod to window sill

  • No adjustment needed — the back tab sits at the top of the rod, so the panel hangs from rod height
  • Example: Rod to sill = 18" → order 18"

Key difference from Rod Pocket: Back Tab gives a cleaner, more structured front with no visible gathering. Rod Pocket creates a softer, more casual gathered look.

cafe pinch pleat curtain panel size

4. Cafe Pinch Pleat Double

What it looks like: Structured double pleats (2-fold) pinched together at regular intervals. Small metal hooks are included — attach to rings or a rod with rings. Creates a formal, tailored look.

Specifications:

  • Pleat space: 4" between pleats, 2" side return
  • Fullness: 2.25x (built into manufacturing)
  • Pleat length: ~4"
  • Bottom hem: ~1 1/8"

Best for: More formal kitchens, dining rooms, or anyone who wants a polished cafe curtain look.

Width Formula

Panel Width = Rod Width ÷ Number of Panels

  • Fullness (2.25x) is built into manufacturing — you only enter the rod width
  • Example: 36" rod, 2 panels → each panel = 18"

Length Formula

Panel Length = Distance from top of rod to window sill − 1"

  • The −1" accounts for the hook and ring raising the curtain above the rod
  • Example: Rod to sill = 18" → order 17"

Important: Rings are ordered separately with the Joe Rod. Make sure to add rings to your order.

5. Cafe Pinch Pleat Triple

What it looks like: Same structure as the Double, but with 3-fold pleats for a fuller, more luxurious appearance.

Specifications:

  • Pleat space: 4" between pleats, 2" side return
  • Fullness: 2.8x (built into manufacturing)
  • Pleat length: ~4"
  • Bottom hem: ~1 1/8"

Best for: Richer, more dramatic cafe curtain look. Works well with heavier fabrics.

Width Formula

Panel Width = Rod Width ÷ Number of Panels

  • Fullness (2.8x) is built into manufacturing
  • Example: 36" rod, 2 panels → each panel = 18"

Length Formula

Panel Length = Distance from top of rod to window sill − 1"

  • Example: Rod to sill = 18" → order 17"

6. Cafe Euro Pleat Double

What it looks like: Euro pleats sit flat at the top with the pleat forming below — creating a cleaner, more modern look compared to Pinch Pleat. Small metal hooks included.

Specifications:

  • Pleat space: 4" between pleats, 2" side return
  • Fullness: 2.25x (built into manufacturing)
  • Pleat length: ~4"
  • Bottom hem: ~1 1/8"
  • No extra pleat length above the header (unlike Pinch Pleat)

Best for: Modern, Scandinavian, or minimalist interiors. Cleaner top line than Pinch Pleat.

Width Formula

Panel Width = Rod Width ÷ Number of Panels

  • Example: 36" rod, 2 panels → each panel = 18"

Length Formula

Panel Length = Distance from top of rod to window sill − 1"

  • Example: Rod to sill = 18" → order 17"

Key difference from Pinch Pleat: Euro Pleat has no extra pleat length above the header — the top line is flat and clean. Choose Euro Pleat for a sleeker, modern look; choose Pinch Pleat for a more structured, formal top.

7. Cafe Euro Pleat Triple

What it looks like: Three-fold Euro pleats for maximum fullness with a modern, flat top header.

Specifications:

  • Pleat space: 4" between pleats, 2" side return
  • Fullness: 2.8x (built into manufacturing)
  • Pleat length: ~4"
  • Bottom hem: ~1 1/8"

Best for: Full, luxurious cafe curtains with a contemporary look.

Width Formula

Panel Width = Rod Width ÷ Number of Panels

  • Example: 36" rod, 2 panels → each panel = 18"

Length Formula

Panel Length = Distance from top of rod to window sill − 1"

  • Example: Rod to sill = 18" → order 17"

Common Measuring Mistakes to Avoid

1. Measuring the window frame instead of the rod
Always measure your installed rod — not the window opening. The rod width is what determines your curtain width.

2. Forgetting the length adjustment for your header style

  • Rod Pocket: add 1" (pocket sits above the rod)
  • Back Tab: no adjustment (tab sits at rod height)
  • Flat Panel: measure from clip or hook position, not rod top
  • Pleat styles with hooks: subtract 1" (hook and ring raise the curtain above the rod)

3. Ordering without rings for pleat and flat panel styles
Cafe Pinch Pleat and Euro Pleat styles require rings ordered separately with the Joe Rod. Cafe Flat Panel also requires rings or clips ordered separately.

4. Not accounting for the sill
Cafe curtains should end at or just above the window sill. Always measure to the sill, then apply the correct adjustment for your header style.

5. Using the wrong fullness for non-pleat styles
For Rod Pocket, Back Tab, and Flat Panel, you specify the fullness when ordering. 2.0x gives a balanced look; 2.5x gives a fuller, more traditional gather. For pleat styles, fullness is built in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I mount my cafe curtain rod?

Typically at the midpoint of the window — at the window sill level or 1–2 inches above it. This gives you privacy at eye level while keeping the upper half of the window open for light.

What is the difference between Cafe Back Tab and Cafe Rod Pocket?

Both slide onto the rod, but Back Tab has hidden loops on the back that create a cleaner, more structured front with no visible gathering. Rod Pocket creates a softer, more casual gathered look. Back Tab is also slightly easier to slide open and closed than Rod Pocket.

What is Cafe Flat Panel and how is it different from other styles?

Cafe Flat Panel uses a 4-in-1 tape header that gives you four different hanging options from one panel: flat panel with clip rings, pencil pleat, back tab style, or flat hooks. It's the most versatile cafe header and works with rods, rings, clips, and tracks including IKEA Vidga. Rings and clips are not included and must be ordered separately.

What is the difference between Pinch Pleat and Euro Pleat for cafe curtains?

Both create structured pleats, but the pleat position differs. Pinch Pleat has the pleat pinched at the top of the header, adding ~4" of pleat length above the main panel. Euro Pleat has a flat top with the pleat forming below — creating a cleaner, more modern top line with no extra height.

Do I need rings for cafe pleat styles?

Yes. Cafe Pinch Pleat and Euro Pleat styles come with small metal hooks that attach to rings. Rings are ordered separately with the Joe Rod. Cafe Rod Pocket and Back Tab slide directly onto the rod — no rings needed.

How long should cafe curtains be?

Cafe curtains should end at or just above the window sill. Rod Pocket: rod to sill + 1". Back Tab: rod to sill (no adjustment). Flat Panel: clip/hook position to sill. Pleat styles: rod to sill − 1".

What fullness should I choose for cafe curtains?

For Rod Pocket, Back Tab, and Flat Panel, 2.0x gives a balanced look and 2.5x gives a fuller gather. For pleat styles (Pinch Pleat and Euro Pleat), fullness is built into the manufacturing — you only need to enter the rod width.

Can I use cafe curtains on a standard curtain rod?

Yes, as long as the rod diameter fits the pocket or ring size. Cafe Rod Pocket fits rods up to 1 1/2" diameter. Back Tab and Flat Panel work with any rod that fits your rings or clips.
