Best Shade Solutions for French Doors in Rental Homes
Why Traditional Shades Fail Your French Doors in a Rental
Renters face unique challenges when it comes to adding privacy and light control to French doors. Traditional shade solutions for French doors often leave you choosing between your security deposit and your comfort.
- • Drilling into metal or fine wood door frames can cause damage, void warranties, and ruin the door’s look and structure.
- • Standard curtains swing when doors open, blocking the doorway, getting stuck, and making daily use annoying.
- • Renters often can’t drill due to lease rules, leaving few options for privacy and light control on French doors.
- • Permanent installations can leave holes and marks, risking loss of the security deposit and costly repairs.

Expert Guide to Damage-Free Shade Measurement for French Doors
Measurement Checklist
-
Measure Width
Measure the inside width of your frame at the very top. Deduct 3/8" from this measurement for proper fit.
-
Measure Length
Measure from the highest point inside your window frame down to your desired length for the shade.
-
Verify Requirements
Ensure frame depth is at least 1 5/8". Size limits are Width: 20"-55" and Length: 16"-78". Inside mount only.
-
Door Handle Clearance
Measure the depth of your door handle. Make sure the profile of your chosen window treatment is shallow enough that it won't interfere with door handle operation. This is especially important for heavier styles like roman shades or bamboo shades.

Frequently Asked Questions about No-Drill French Door Shades
Get answers to the most common questions about installing shades on French doors in rental properties.
What types of French door frames work with no-drill shades?
No-drill shades rely on the structural integrity of your door frame for secure mounting. They work best on hard, solid materials like metal, vinyl, or composite frames. Soft wood, decorative trim, or pieced molding may not provide enough support for tension or adhesive mounts. Before ordering, check that your frame is solid, smooth, and at least 2" deep for optimal hold.
Are there size or weight limits for no-drill shades?
Yes. No-drill shades use tension or adhesive mounting systems that work best for standard-sized French doors and windows. Very large or heavy treatments may exceed the weight capacity of damage-free hardware. Our no-drill shades are designed for widths of 20"-55" and lengths of 16"-78". For larger French doors or heavier fabric options, we recommend traditional drill-mounted brackets for secure, long-term support.
What are the key requirements for my window frame to be compatible?
For a successful installation, your window frame must meet three key criteria:
Frame Type: It must be a solid, single-piece frame. The system is not suitable for joined/multi-part frames as the pressure could push them apart.
Surface: The inside mounting surface must be flat and at a 90-degree angle. It is not compatible with curved, angled, or decorative molding.
Depth: You need a minimum depth of 1 5/8 inches (4cm). We strongly recommend at least 2 inches (5cm) for the most secure fit and to allow room for the fabric stack when the shade is raised.
They are perfect for apartment living, rentals, and standard, single-window openings with a solid, flat interior frame.
