How to Hang Custom Curtains Beautifully in 8 Steps

Quick answer: To hang custom curtains well, decide where the rod or track will sit before ordering, measure from that mounting point to your intended hem, confirm that the curtain header works with your hardware, and check panel coverage when the curtains are both open and closed. Then mount the hardware securely, hang the panels, adjust the hem, and arrange the folds. If you have an unusual window, start with our window-by-window hanging guide instead.

A custom panel is made for a particular width, length, and header. That is why installation starts with the mounting plan, not with a drill. This eight-step checklist is for a standard wall-mounted rod or compatible track; always follow the instructions supplied with your actual hardware and use mounting methods appropriate to your wall.

Before you start: check the order against the window

Have your order details, panels, hardware instructions, tape measure, pencil, level, and the tools specified for your mounting surface to hand. Confirm the ordered panel width and length, number of panels, header style, and whether you ordered a rod or track. If any of those differ from the delivered items, resolve the discrepancy before making holes in the wall.

How to hang custom curtains in 8 steps

  1. Choose the mounting position. Decide whether the curtains should frame the glass, clear trim, and stack to the sides when open. Mark the intended rod or track position before taking the final drop measurement. For different window shapes, consult the window-type guide; there is no single mounting position that works for every room.
  2. Measure the finished drop and coverage. Measure from the point specified for your selected header and hardware to the desired hem. Record the left, center, and right drops if the floor is uneven. Measure the full area the closed panels must cover, including any side overlap you need. Use Curtarra's curtain measurement tool and the product's own measuring instructions before placing a custom order.
  3. Match the header to the hardware. Check whether the ordered panel uses rings, hooks, grommets, or a track-compatible heading; do not assume every header attaches to every rod or track. The header-type hanging guide explains the differences. If you have not yet chosen hardware, browse the Curtarra hardware collection and verify compatibility on the individual product page or with the design team.
  4. Mark and mount the supports. Use a level to mark bracket or track positions. Check for obstructions and follow the hardware manufacturer's directions for fasteners, spacing, and wall type. Do not rely on a universal spacing or load rule: the correct fixings depend on both the wall and the complete curtain-and-hardware setup.
  5. Attach the panels and test movement. Fit the heading to the rod, rings, hooks, or track carriers according to the hardware instructions. Open and close the curtains slowly. Check that the panels travel freely, meet where intended, and can stack without blocking more glass than planned.
  6. Check the hem in the room. Stand back and compare both sides. A floor-skimming, just-off-floor, or puddled finish is a design choice; the right choice also depends on traffic and cleaning needs. If the drop is wrong, investigate the mounting point and heading first rather than immediately altering a custom panel. See our curtain-length guide for the visual tradeoffs.
  7. Release packing creases safely. Check the care guidance for the specific curtain fabric and lining before using heat, water, a steamer, or an iron. Do not assume one treatment is suitable for every custom curtain. Allow the panels to hang and settle before making a final judgment on the drape.
  8. Arrange the folds and recheck function. Space the folds or pleats evenly from the header downward, then test the curtains open and closed again. If you have a pleated heading, our pleat-training guide covers the finishing stage in more depth.

Common mistakes and what to check first

What you notice Likely check Next action
The hem is uneven Compare the installed support height and floor-to-mount drops at both ends Correct the mounting issue, if any, before changing the panel
Panels look too narrow when closed Compare ordered panel coverage with the full rod or track span Review width and panel count before ordering additional fabric
The curtain will not slide freely Check the heading and hardware combination Use the product-specific installation guidance; do not force incompatible parts
Open panels block too much light Check available wall space for stack-back beside the window Reconsider support length or panel layout before remounting
Folds look irregular Check that attachment points and pleats are evenly spaced Arrange the fabric after hanging and allow it to settle

Frequently asked questions

Should I install the rod before ordering custom curtains?

Decide and mark the intended rod or track position before taking the final length measurement. If the hardware is not installed yet, follow the measurement method for the exact header and hardware you plan to use.

Do custom curtains work with any curtain rod?

No. The curtain header and attachment method must match the rod, rings, hooks, or track. Check both product specifications and installation instructions before ordering.

What if my custom curtains touch the floor more than expected?

First check the installed mounting height, the measurement reference point, and whether the floor is level. Then compare the result with the ordered length before deciding whether an alteration is needed.

Can I steam every custom curtain after hanging?

No. Check the care instructions for the specific fabric and lining before applying heat or moisture. Let the curtain hang and settle first if you are unsure.

Ready to plan a made-to-measure set? Start with the curtain measurement tool, then choose a compatible heading and hardware. For nonstandard windows or uncertain mounting conditions, ask Curtarra's design team before ordering.
